Cardiovascular agents are a varied group of medications used to remedy a range of heart and vascular diseases. These agents are classified according to their therapeutic action. High blood pressure antihypertensives are used, such as ACE inhibitors (enalapril) and beta-blockers (metoprolol) to reduce it. Warfarin and heparin ruling the world are anticoagulants, meaning they prevent the formation of blood clots, thereby reducing the probability of stroke and heart attacks. Coumarins, aspirins and clopidogrel are antiplatelet agents which prevent the formation of clots by inhibiting platelet aggregation. Furosemide is a diuretic to promotes the elimination of excess sodium and water, particularly in the case of controlling blood pressure. Statins like atorvastatin work as lipid-lowering agents to help reduce cholesterol levels as the risk of atherosclerosis is thereby minimized. Also, antiarrhythmics such as amiodarone control abnormal heart rhythms.
