Polystyrene

(9003-53-6)
Polystyrene is used to produce disposable plastic cutlery, CD cases, smoke detector housings, license plate frames, plastic model assembly kits, and many other items that require a rigid, economical plastic. Production methods include thermoforming and injection molding. Polystyrene petri dishes and other laboratory containers play an important role in biomedical research and science. For these uses, the items are almost always made by injection molding and are usually sterilized after molding by irradiation or treatment with ethylene oxide. Post-molding surface modification usually uses an oxygen-rich plasma, often to introduce polar groups. Much modern biomedical research relies on the use of such products. Polystyrene foam contains 95–98% air and has good thermal insulation properties, so it is often used as a building insulation material, for example in insulated concrete forms and structural insulated board building systems. Gray polystyrene foam containing graphite has excellent thermal insulation properties. Expanded polystyrene is used to make food containers, building insulation moldings, and packaging materials, both as solid blocks to hold protected items and as loosely filled ""peanuts"" to cushion fragile items within a box. It is also widely used in automotive and road safety applications, such as motorcycle helmets and roadblocks on racing tracks. The vast majority of expanded polystyrene products are manufactured by injection molding. The mold tools are often made of steel (which can be hardened and plated) and aluminum alloys. The mold is controlled by a channel system consisting of gates and runners.

Propylene Oxide

(75-56-9)
Propylene oxide is an organic compound with the molecular formula CH3CHCH2O. This colourless volatile liquid is produced on a large scale industrially, its major application being its use for the production of polyether polyols for use in making polyurethane plastics. It is a chiral epoxide, although it is commonly used as a racemic mixture. This compound is sometimes called 1,2-propylene oxide to distinguish it from its isomer 1,3-propylene oxide, better known as oxetane.

Hydrocarbons generally refer to hydrocarbons and are a type of organic compound. This compound consists of only two elements, carbon and hydrogen, including alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, cyclic hydrocarbons, and aromatic hydrocarbons, and is the matrix of many other organic compounds. There are many types of hydrocarbons, which can be divided into: open-chain hydrocarbons, alicyclic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbon derivatives are compound compounds that continue to combine with other elemental substances or other compounds. Derivatives of hydrocarbons are more colorful and diverse. It mainly combines with oxygen, chlorine, bromine and their hydrides to form a huge derivative community.

More Information

Hydrocarbons, also known as carbonaceous compounds, are organic compounds composed solely of carbon and hydrogen. These compounds, commonly referred to as hydrocarbons, form through reactions with chlorine, bromine vapor, oxygen, and other elements. Methane (CH4) is the simplest hydrocarbon molecule, consisting of a central carbon atom connected to four hydrogen atoms.

In our daily lives, we frequently encounter hydrocarbons. For instance, propane in natural gas and butane in lighters are both examples of hydrocarbons. They serve as fuels due to the vast energy stored within their covalent bonds. During combustion, this energy is released in the form of heat as they react with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water.

Hydrocarbons encompass various types, including:
● aromatic hydrocarbons
● saturated hydrocarbons
● aliphatic hydrocarbons
