Nitrates are salts formed by the reaction of HNO3 with metals. Nitrate is an ionic compound, a general term for compounds derived from nitric acid. It consists of metal ions (or ammonium ions) and nitrate ions. Common nitrates are NaNO3, KNO3, NH4NO3, Ca(NO3)2, Pb(NO3)2, Ce(NO3)3·6H2O, etc. The main use is nitrogen fertilizer for plant uptake.
