APHERMATE is a colorless liquid, d25 25 0.935–0.943, n20 D 1.445–1.453, with a fresh woody, herbal, seashore-like odor. It is used to create modern herbaceous top notes in perfume oils for nearly all applications.
The material is prepared by reaction of 3,7-dimethyl-1,6-octadiene with formic acid under acid catalysis.

The part used is the ripe fruits (seeds). When ripe, the fruits exhibit a warm, pleasant odor.

The cis- and trans-isomermixture is separated by distillation.
