Sesquiterpenes are natural organic compounds derived from three isoprene units; forming a major sub-group of the terpenes. Sesquiterpenes are highly structurally diverse and have important functional properties that find uses in numerous sectors. A particular subgroup, a sesquiterpene lactone, contains a lactone ring, which is a source of its wide spectrum of activity, including anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial action. This interlocking between monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes in essential oils further complements their fragrance and increases their market demand.
