Sesquiterpene

Sesquiterpenes are compounds built of three isoprene units and demonstrate a high variety of structures and functions. The sesquiterpene lactones with lactone rings are endowed with biological activities. Monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes are important in the synthesis of fragrances, flavors and pharmaceuticals because of their versatility. The sesquicarbonyl group (sesquiterpene) refers to a natural alkyl compound containing 15 carbon atoms in the molecule and contains three isoprene units. It has various stacking structures such as chain and ring. Uncle sesqui is mostly liquid and mainly exists in the volatile oil of plants. Oxygen derivatives such as alcohols, ketones and lactones are also widely present in volatile oils.

More Information

Sesquiterpenes are natural organic compounds derived from three isoprene units; forming a major sub-group of the terpenes. Sesquiterpenes are highly structurally diverse and have important functional properties that find uses in numerous sectors. A particular subgroup, a sesquiterpene lactone, contains a lactone ring, which is a source of its wide spectrum of activity, including anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial action. This interlocking between monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes in essential oils further complements their fragrance and increases their market demand.

Sesquiterpenes obtained from natural resources such as plants and flowers have found their way into producing raw materials for high-level industries. These poorly defined compounds are not only useful for their bioactivities but also for their chemical tunability to drive new products.

Applications of Sesquiterpenes:

● Manufacturing of perfumes and olive oils.

● Synthesis of natural food and beverage flavoring.

● The synthesis of pharmaceutical compounds.

● Natural pesticides and repellents are manufactured.

● Improvement of the cosmetic goods.

● For the study of bioactive compounds.
