 Is K2SO4 soluble in water?

K2SO4 is a kind of inorganic salt, a white powder, and a strong reliability. It is easily soluble in water, which can precipitate K+, SO42-, but it doesn’t react with water. K2SO4 has double characters of alkaline and acidic because K+ is an alkaline ion and SO42- is an acidic ion. So K2SO4 can be used as a pH regulator, which is soluble in polar solvents (such as water), but not well soluble in non-polar solvents.

What determines whether a substance is soluble in water?

After talking about the issue “Is K2SO4 soluble in water”, we want to discuss the factors that affect whether a substance dissolves in water.

1. Similar structures of the compound can dissolve each other. For example, ethanol, glycerin and acetic acid with a hydroxyl group (-OH) have a similar structure with water (H-OH), so ethanol, glycerin, acetic acid and water can be miscible in any proportion.

2. Compounds of similar polarity are soluble. That is to say, polar molecules are soluble in polar solvents, and non-polar molecules are soluble in non-polar solvents. For example, water is a polar solvent, and polar molecules such as HCl, SO3 and so on are easily soluble in water.

3. Due to hydrogen bonds, certain substances such as NH3, HF are highly soluble in water. Besides, most salts are soluble in water, such as potassium, sodium and ammonium salts. Of course, there are some exceptions. For example, barium sulfate, lead sulfate, and calcium sulfate are not soluble in water, but other sulfates are soluble in water.

The security of K2SO

K2SO4 is a non-toxic substance, but that doesn't mean it's harmless in every situation. When consumed in excess, it can cause diarrhea, vomiting, headaches, mental abnormalities, or skin allergies. In serious cases, it will result in muscle cramps, difficulty breathing, a slow heartbeat, and even death. Therefore, when using K2SO4, you should be careful.

How to manufacture K2SO4?

K2SO4 is prepared from potassium salt ore of sulfate type and lake brine containing potassium salt. 98% sulfuric acid and potassium chloride reacting at a high temperature of 550℃ to directly manufacture K2SO4. Hydrogen chloride is produced in the reaction process, and hydrochloric acid is produced as a by-product when absorbed by water. This is the main method for the industrial production of K2SO4 in China, named the Manham method.

Agricultural application of K2SO4

Is K2SO4 soluble in water? From the above discussion, it is not difficult to conclude that K2SO4 is soluble in water. And it is a good water-soluble potassium fertilizer with a small hygroscopic, not easy to agglomerate. K2SO4 is a kind of high quality and efficient potassium fertilizer, particularly in the cultivation of crops such as grapes, potatoes, tea trees and a variety of fruit trees. It is also the main raw material of high-quality nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium ternary compound fertilizer.

Potassium sulfate compound fertilizer contains N, P and K which are essential for plants. Besides the three major elements, it also contains S, Ca, Mg, Zn, Fe, Cu and other trace elements. It is suited for various kinds of commercial crops.

Precautions for using K2SO4

First, the excessive K2SO4 will make the soil more acidic and even exacerbate the toxicity of active aluminum and iron in the acidic soil. If flooding conditions happened, excessive sulfate will be reduced to hydrogen sulfide, causing the roots to be black. Therefore, the long-term application of K2SO4 should be combined with farm fertilizer, alkaline phosphate fertilizer and lime to reduce acidity, and should also be combined with drainage and drying measures to improve ventilation in practice.

Second, in calcareous soil, sulfate and calcium ions in the soil form calcium sulfate that is not easily dissolved. Superfluous calcium sulfate will lead to soil compaction, then we should increase the application of farm fertilizer.

Third, this fertilizer is physiologically acidic salt, so applied to alkaline soil can reduce the PH of the soil.

Conclusion

This brings us to conclude our article on the theme of "Is K2SO4 soluble in water". K2SO4 is soluble in water, and all of the potassium salts are soluble in water. In this paper, we also introduce the factors that determine the solubility of a substance in water. Mastering this rule is helpful for us to judge whether a compound is soluble in water. At last, K2SO4 is widely used in the agricultural field, so we introduce some precautions for its use in this field.
