On March 15, 2024, Greece's Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food released its comprehensive "Annual Summary Report on National Pesticide Residue Control in 2022." The report reveals the results of the analysis conducted on 3,655 food samples throughout the year.
According to the report, out of the analyzed samples, 88 food samples (2.4%) were found to be non-compliant. These samples consisted of 2 grain samples, 54 fruit, vegetable, and nut samples, and 32 samples of other plant-based foods. The non-compliant items primarily included pistachios with excessive imidacloprid levels, olive oil with fluoropyruvate exceeding the limits, curry powder with excessive levels of chlorfenapyr, mixed food supplements with excessive ethylene oxide, and cumin powder with elevated levels of acephate, chlorfenapyr, cyflumetofen, triadimefon, carbendazim, and benalaxyl.
The report emphasizes the importance of maintaining strict control over pesticide residues in food products to ensure consumer safety and compliance with regulations. It highlights the significance of ongoing monitoring, testing, and enforcement measures to address pesticide residue issues effectively.
Furthermore, the report provides detailed insights into the specific non-compliant food samples, their respective pesticide residues, and the potential risks associated with their consumption. The Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food aims to raise awareness among food producers, distributors, and consumers regarding the importance of adhering to pesticide residue regulations and implementing good agricultural practices.
