Australia and New Zealand Propose to Allow Milk Fat Globule Membrane-Enriched Whey Protein Concentrate in Infant Formula

ECHEMI 2024-08-15

New measures are being implemented in Australia and New Zealand to allow the addition of whey protein concentrate rich in milk fat globule (MFGM) as a nutritional supplement to infant formula. The Food Standards Agency of Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) has announced that it is considering an application (A1307) to approve the use of the ingredient in infant formula.

In a notice published on August 15, 2024, FSANZ clarified that the purpose of the application is to allow the addition of whey protein concentrate, which is rich in butterfat globule film, as a nutrient component in infant formula. The application is currently under review and FSANZ is seeking public comment on this proposed change.

Milk fat globules (MFGM), a naturally occurring component of milk, are rich in essential fatty acids, phospholipids and many other nutrients. According to research, these ingredients play an important role in promoting brain development, enhancing immune function, and improving intestinal health.

The addition of MFGM-rich whey protein concentrate to infant formula is a relatively new trend. However, with increasing evidence of its health benefits for infants, the practice is increasingly being taken seriously.

FSANZ's decision to review this application marks a positive development in ensuring that infants receive optimal nutrition. It is important to note that the application is still under consideration and FSANZ will make a final decision based on available scientific evidence and public comments.
