Sublimes @ 150-225 °C|FP: 238.1 °F= 114.5 °C= 387 deg K /Cupric nitrate trihydrate/|Blue, deliquescent, rhombic plates; practically insoluble in ethyl acetate; pH of 0.2 M aqueous solution 4.0, melting point 114.5 °C, MW 241.60, density 2.05; BP 170, decomposes /Cupric nitrate trihydrate/|Blue, deliquescent, prismatic crystals, loses 3 waters at 26.4 °C, density 2.07, freely soluble in water, sol in alc /Cupric nitrate hexahydrate/|Dissolves in and reacts vigorously with ether|Decomposition begins around 80 °C upon formation of the basic salt; at temperatures of 180 °C the oxide is produced.

    Air and Water Reactions:

    Deliquescent. Water soluble.

    Reactive Group:

    Nitrate and Nitrite Compounds, Inorganic

    Reactivity Alerts:

    Strong Oxidizing Agent

    Reactivity Profile:

Mixtures of CUPRIC NITRATE with alkyl esters may explode, owing to the formation of alkyl nitrates. Mixtures with phosphorus, tin(II) chloride or other reducing agents may react explosively [Bretherick, 1979 p. 108-109]. A finely divided mixture of potassium ferrocyanide and cupric nitrate exploded when dried at 220° C [Chem. Abst. 77:1343 (1972)]. Noncombustible, but it will accelerate the burning of combustible materials. If large quantities of the material are involved in a fire or the material is finely divided, an explosion may result. Prolonged exposure to fire or heat may result in an explosion.
